In the following recipe, the daylily flowers used are the kind with yellow flowers. Chinese people call them golden needles.

Mushroom Golden Needles (Day Lilies)


  • Dried daylily -- 1 cup (use a fresh one if you have some), check here for tips about edible flowers
  • Black mushrooms -- 1/4 cup
  • Tofu -- regular firm, 1/2 cup, cut into bite-size
  • Vegetable oil -- 1 tablespoon
  • Soy sauce -- 2/3 tablespoon
  • Sugar -- 1 teaspoon
  • Cornstarch -- 1 teaspoon
  • Water -- 1/3 cup
  • Sesame oil -- 1/4 tablespoon (optional)
  1. Soak day lilies in cold water to soften them. Clean and cut the stem ends.
  2. Soak black mushrooms in warm water and clean them. Don't wash too hard or they'll lose their flavor.
  3. Mix cornstarch and water, set aside.
  4. Heat veggie oil in a wok, add the mushrooms to stir cook until aromatic.

  6. Add tofu and daylilies to stir fry.
  7. Pour soy sauce, sugar and cornstarch mix in, stir so the sauce can thicken.
  8. Add sesame oil to mix. Take out and enjoy.
