What is Potassium: Potassium is a mineral that is essential to our good health. It helps our body maintain fluid balance, nerve function and muscle contraction. It also aids the proper transmission of electrical impulses in the heart.

Like a Chinse idiom said, going beyond the limit is as bad as falling short (Guo You Bu Ji). Both low and high potassium levels can cause some health concerns. The best way to obtain potassium is to take it from food.

You can also take it from supplements if you cannot get enough from food alone. However, no matter where you get potassium, the total amount should not be more than 90 mEq daily.

Potassium Side Effects

Too high or too low potassium levels may disrupt the normal electrical impulses in the heart, leading to irregular heartbeats; it may also cause stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal gas, and other side effects.

Too much potassium can produce feelings of burning or tingling, dizziness, generalized weakness, paralysis, listlessness, low blood pressure, mental confusion, irregular heart rhythm, and death.

When you need to take special precautions:

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Follow the advice of your doctors.

  • If you have digestive tract disorders. Follow the advice of your doctors. Too much potassium could build up to dangerous levels in your body.

  • If you are allergic to aspirin or tartrazine products. Try to avoid potassium supplements that contain tartrazine.
