What Is Magnesium?

   

What is magnesium? You might have known from what you've learnes that magnesium is a common alkaline earth metal (an element) on earth with the symbol Mg. It's too reactive to be found naturally, but it is the third most abundant element dissolved in seawater.

 

The Role of Magnesium in Our Body Functions

Magnesium plays an important role in our body functions and health. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in our body, and approximately 50% of it is in our bones; the other half inside cells of body tissues and organs. A very small percentage (about 1%) of magnesium is found in blood.

Magnesium participates in more than 300 biochemical reactions in our body. It's crucial in but not limited to the following areas:

  • helping maintain normal nerve functions
  • letting muscles stay healthy
  • keeping heart rhythm steady
  • supporting a healthy immune system
  • keeping bones strong
  • helping regulate blood sugar levels
  • promoting normal blood pressure
  • helping energy metabolism and protein synthesis
  • playing a role in preventing and managing hypertension

Magnesium deficiency may cause many problems. If you have a lack of magnesium, you may need to take magnesium supplements and choose magnesium-rich foods for diet.
