This Chinese dessert recipe is especially good for young children and elderly people, though anybody can enjoy its benefit and taste. It is newly favored as the Chinese New Year dessert, because it has an auspicious meaning of being prosperous.

One of the Chinese traditional prosperity symbols is an ingot of gold shaped like a half moon, a simple boat, an elliptic or an oval with a circular or oval little bump in the middle, called Yuanbao, or Sycee in Cantonese, a currency used in China until the 20th century.

The picture of Yuanbao and decorative Yuanbao are widely used as a symbolic good wish during the Chinese Spring Festival (Chinese New Year).

The Yuanbao banana egg has a resemblance of Yuanbao both in color and in shape, that's how it has its wealth-related name while it is also simply called "fried banana egg", or "fried egg banana". If you are really into the symbolic shape, pay attention to how you cut the bananas as indicated in the directions bellow.

Bananas are nutritious, low in calories, and rich in potassium, tryptophan, vitamin B6 and phosphorus -- a mineral referred to as "salt of wisdom" because it is good for brain health. All the nutrient content makes bananas a good food for children and the elderly.

When a banana is combined with egg, a super source of high quality protein, the result is even better to both taste and health. To know who you cook for is important though in terms of health concern.

While egg yolk is rich in lecithin, triglycerides, cholesterol and Flavin, which are important on the development of a child's neural system, the cholesterol might not be good for an older adult who has cholesterol concerns or is on a high blood pressure diet. If this is the case, an elderly person might have to limit the amount of this dessert (s)he eats.

I've talked too much. Now the recipe:


  • Banana -- 4
  • Eggs -- 2
  • Salt -- a pinch
  • Vegetable oil -- 1 cup, used about 1 tablespoon


  1. Cut bananas into 1cm thick oval shaped pieces if you want it to be simple. Or you can cut bananas into 2 inch long Yuanbao shaped "ingots". To achieve this, try to cut the banana as some trapezoids, one cut on the left side, one cut on the right, and the natural curve of a banana will make it llike a Yuanbao.)

  2. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

  3. Beat eggs and add salt into it. Mix well.

  4. Coat banana pieces with egg mixture and then put them into the pan to lightly fry until the egg coat is well cooked.

  5. Put the banana ingots/pieces on a plate. For decorative purpose, you can choose to lay down one layer of embroidery paper on the plate before you put banana ingots/pieces on it. Use some green and colored veggies in the center. If it pleases you, it'll please your guests.

  6. Serve and enjoy.
